California Fuchsia
A tough, beautiful California native grown for its silvery foliage, arching stems, and vivid tubular blooms that light up the garden in late summer and fall, just when everything else is starting to look a little crispy and regretful. California fuchsia is especially loved by hummingbirds, who treat it like an all-you-can-eat buffet, and its soft gray-green leaves and bright red-orange flowers bring wonderful texture, movement, and color to naturalistic arrangements. This is a low-water, heat-tolerant perennial that thrives in full sun, handles poor soil, and asks for very little once established, which is the sort of attitude we appreciate. Harvest stems when several blooms are open, or plant generously for pollinators, habitat, and that wild, beautiful “California knows what it’s doing” look. Excellent for native gardens, pollinators, hummingbirds, low-water landscapes, and seasonal cuts. Perennial. Spreads by runners.
